Out of the Valley is the result of bringing architect and maker to work closely as one, we maintain a fully in-house service from our studio and workshop where each discipline informs the other. We believe that this creates a coherence in our work and enables us to bring a considered quality to every project.

Our process is a collaborative one, we work closely with our clients to create spaces & furniture that are reflective of your ideas and our values.

We can provide a full design and build service, taking a project from the early stages of concept development and feasibility, all the way to completion.

We have a range of facilities at our studio that allow us to prefabricate large portions of our projects, this helps to reduce build time, increase efficiency and most importantly raise the quality of craftsmanship. Our work covers many different sectors, from holiday cabins, private studios and saunas to interiors and furniture.

We specialise in working sensitively and taking a holistic approach to the design & build process.

Rupert McKelvie

Founding Director

I spent much of my childhood in my parents workshop playing with offcuts of wood and shavings, I still have the first table I ever made. It was this love of the material that led me into wooden boat building, I wanted to learn century old techniques from the masters and acquire the skills to make a sea fairing vessel with your own hands, perhaps even to sail around the world one day.  A cabin is perhaps the most similar structure that can be applied to land, designed and built to shelter us from the elements, a container to navigate the seasons in. I built my first cabin as an off-grid home for myself when I moved back to Devon in 2016, it resonated with so many that subsequently Out of the Valley was founded, specialising in building considered spaces with natural materials.

Luke Carnaby

Operations Manger

Luke joined the team in 2018, having spent time with Moon as an architectural assistant he wanted to transition into a more hands on role of designing and making, he found the right place!. Luke brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to our team and heads up the architectural side of our practice, he eye for detail and championing for the use of natural materials resonates perfectly with Out of the Valleys ethos. He’s also a passionate surfer.

Out of the Valley have raised the bar in the market for bespoke cabins. See them more as pieces of furniture, beautifully detailed and exquisitely built, with materials and finishes designed for a lifetime.

Niall Maxwell, Rural office for architecture, RIBA house of the year 2017

Rupert is an artist. His understanding of form, materials and texture and how a sustainably built space can integrate into the natural environment, to create something of beauty, is to be admired. It’s not just what his spaces look like, it’s how they feel - how they work from an aesthetic as well as practical point of view. These are spaces designed not to be looked at, but to be used and enjoyed, for many years to come. I would recommend Out of the Valley to anyone looking for creativity and flourishes of design detail and craftsmanship, and who will relish the process of collaborating and developing something truly special.
